Every year the PTA puts on many fun events and supports programs of Green Elementary. Below is just an example of the many things we do.
Back To School Night - Green Elementary and Green PTA
This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, take a look at their classroom, and learn what the planned curriculum will be for the school year.
Book Fair - Green Elementary
Twice yearly, in conjunction with Back to School and Open House, we host a week-long book fair of books and other items. Students preview the book fair during their library time and can complete a “Wish List” of books that interest them. Purchases can be made at recess, lunch, and after school, as well as during the Back to School or Open House event. A portion of the proceeds directly benefit the Green library.
Green Movie Night - Green PTA
Come out and enjoy an evening with friends and fun under the stars! Pack a dinner or indulge in some goodies we will have available that night and sit back and watch a family friendly movie.
Fall Product Sale - Green PTA
This is our school year kick off fundraising event. Students are given a packet of information including catalog, order forms, etc, to sell items. There are prize incentives according to the number of items sold. Up to 50% of the proceeds benefit the PTA.
PTA Membership Drive - Green PTA
Each family is given an opportunity to join the PTA at the beginning of each school year. A small portion of the membership fee goes to the California/ National PTA organization, and the remaining money stays here at Green. With this money, and other money raised during the year, your PTA is able to provide many off- and on-site programs for the students here at Green.
BBQ/Theme Lunches - Green Elementary
Periodically through the year, Green hosts barbecues and luncheons when families can come enjoy lunch with their children. This is usually a day to wear attire fitting the theme of the day!
Make Good Choices - Green PTA
During a Wednesday in October, we focus on helping kids recognize and make good choices in their lives. Fun activities are planned to help heighten their awareness and promote a better understanding of living a healthy lifestyle.
Gecko Gala - Live and Silent Auction - Green PTA
You won’t want to miss this! The Gecko Gala offers a night out just for parents/guardians to enjoy both a silent and live professional auction. Mark your calendars to attend this fun and festive event to be held this year at the La Mesa Community Center on Friday, November 14th; from 6 to 9pm. Tickets will be $25 per person.
Turkey Trot - Green Elementary
Right before the Thanksgiving Break, every child races through a course around the campus trying to win a turkey or a pie certificate for Thanksgiving. Come and cheer for the kids as they gobble their way to the finish line.
Holiday Sing - Green Elementary
Just in time for the Winter Break! The children gather for an evening performance in the multi-purpose room and sing to their parents and families holiday songs they practiced in their music class all semester. It is a great event to experience for everyone. Bring the video cameras!
Muffin for Moms/Donuts for Dads - Green PTA
Moms and Dads (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) are invited to come to school on their respective day and read a favorite book in their child’s classroom. Parents may bring a favorite book or the teacher will supply one. Afterwards, parents join together in the Teacher’s Lounge for refreshments. This is a MUST-attend event!
Rummage Sale - Green PTA
This is a no-cost fundraiser… We ask for donations from the school community and host a daylong rummage sale, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the PTA. The event is advertised in the community and is open to everyone. Last year we raised $2,500!
Keep GREEN Green - Green PTA
Join Green families, friends, and neighbors in keeping our school ‘GREEN’ by spending a morning beautifying our landscape, working in our gardens, collecting ink and toner cartridges, and plastic grocery bags for recycling. It’s a fun day for everyone to work together to contribute to the health of our environment and planet.
Jump Rope for Heart - Green Elementary
This is an American Heart Association sponsored event, generally held on or near Valentine’s Day. It takes place on the playground, with the students jumping rope intermittently over a 45 minute period. The children are asked ahead of time for sponsors, with all money going to the American Heart Association. Parents are encouraged to come cheer or join on the students. Last year’s jump raised $5,500 for the American Heart Association.
Jog-A-Thon - Green PTA
This is a really fun “fun” raiser! Each child will have 45 minutes to run/walk as many laps as they can around a specified track on the playing field while listening to fun music. They have cards that are marked by volunteers at the completion of each lap. Students are able to win prizes based on the most laps run, the most money raised, etc. The children are asked ahead of time for sponsors, where 100% of the money raised stays at Green! Parents are encouraged to attend - to help mark cards, cheer, or even participate in a lap or two!
National “No TV Week” - Green PTA
This nationally recognized event has everyone involved in turning off their televisions, Game Boys, computers, and Play Stations for one week (Monday-Friday). Studies show that kids are becoming too sedentary in their lives, watching TV and playing video games. This week challenges them to think outside of the box and participate in other activities. At the end of the week, there will be a dance and pizza party for those that tune it out. Are you up for the challenge?
Spring Spectacular - Green PTA
Green is having a springtime festival with games, food, family challenges, and more! It will be a great time for everyone so don’t miss out.
Junior Olympics - Green Elementary
This is the premiere event of the school year. The children have been training for this all year through our fantastic physical education program. Each child participates in our big Opening Ceremony where countries are represented and dances are performed. Then it is off to the races where events from track and field to ball toss are held throughout the week. Come and cheer for your country during this exciting time. Every one is a winner! Don’t forget your cameras.
Race for Literacy - Green Elementary
Each year the Union Tribune sponsors a literacy event in Balboa Park, with a Kid’s Magic Mile event on a Saturday in the Spring. It’s a one mile walk/run that the family can do, followed by a festival atmosphere with music, food, readers, and free books. Apply your mileage to your Running Card!
Volunteer Tea - Green Elementary
Our school relies on its volunteers, from helping in the classroom, assisting in the office, to participating in events. This is a special afternoon of tasty delights and thank-you’s provided by the staff.
Teacher & Staff Appreciation - Green PTA
This is a celebration to recognize and thank the teachers and staff. Events vary from
year to year, but often include a special breakfast, luncheon, and acknowledgements
through the week.
Swim Program - Green Elementary
Each student is provided with 3 weeks of swim and water safety lessons in the spring, done at the La Mesa Municipal Pool. There are swim instructors from the La Mesa Pool, as well as our own Physical Education teachers, providing the instruction. Parents are welcome to come watch and at the end of the three week session it is free swim for everyone!
Poetry Festival - Green Elementary
Each grade level has a focus on poetry at some point during the school year. This assembly provides an opportunity for the students to read either their original poetry or poetry of their choice to the other students in the school. Families are invited to attend.
Read Across America - Green Elementary
The National Education Association’s Read Across America is a reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child to celebrate reading in March on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Fun events are planned to celebrate this day.
Art Gala - Green Elementary & Green PTA
On the night of the Spring Open House, the multi-purpose room has been transformed with help of volunteers into a beautiful museum showcasing art from every class. The PTA provides an art instructor to come every month in each classroom. The students work on projects throughout the year and this is the time their pieces are showcased. It is a wonderful experience to see the faces of the children as they notice their art displayed.
If you would like more information on any of our events or would like to volunteer for one, please contact the PTA at greenelementarypta@gmail.com. If you would like to volunteer inside the classrooms, please talk with the classroom teacher or contact the front office at (619) 460-5755.
